The Camp Get Fit Foundation celebrated it’s 2nd Annual Unmasking Childhood Obesity Gala on Feb. 9 & boy was it a grand affair! From the decorations, to the energy, to our fabulous guests, the evening was fabulous!

2018’s Gala theme focused on Our Beginnings. Let’s recap! Healthy Kids & Teens | The Camp Get Fit Foundation(501C3) was founded in 2006 by a Memphis, TN searching for help for her preteen daughter suffering from bullying due to her weight. Clintonia Simmons-Nichols sought support from what she assumed was a group for parents turned out to be a community meeting with over 1000 attendees put on by Healthy Memphis Common Table & Shaping America’s Youth. Clintonia left that meeting determined to submit a porposal, a workout DVD.

We’ve trained over 25K families & hosted everything from after-school/in-school health programs, summer camps, 5Ks, galas, chef demonstrations, parent mentorship, personal training + more! What started as a media project is now a multi state organization, employing over 50 people in over 4 regions with over 50 collaborative partners + sponsors.

The 2019 Unmasking Gala focused on the partners whose support we cannot do without, our stakeholders! HKT wanted to honor these supports with the Raise the Bar Stakeholder Award.  Our Honorees:

The Rundown

Guests gathered in the lobby of the Children’s Museum of Memphis in their red, black, and gold for the auction/reception hour.

Once the dining room doors opened, you could see the excitement on everyone’s faces. Our decorator, Details by Phyllis Jones, did a fabulous job with the Mardi Gras Circus theme.

Mistress of Ceremony Cynthia Daniels welcomed the guests and began the program. Food was served by Chef D Arther Catering and Bartending services were hosted by Applesauce Bartending.

After fellowship and the delicious meal, Guest speaker, Dr. Jammie Hopkins, Director of Morehouse School of Medicine and the Satcher Health Leadership Institute graced the stage.

Dr Hopkins decided to shift the child’s health focus of the evening to highlighting the power of parent leadership. Dr. Hopkins spoke hard truths about healthy standards for families. He explained that if children are struggling with health concerns, we must hold parents accountable. Parents have the power to shape their children, for good and for bad. Parents must lead their children down a health pathway. Then can our community begin to prioritize healthy living. That is when the community truly becomes the village.

After hearing Dr. Hopkin’s powerful and encouraging words, the Raise the Bar Stakeholder Awards were presented. During the video presentation, each organization leader shared information one their organization as well as  their company’s partnership with HKT.CGF.

Board Chairman Sophia Young thanked all sponsors, partners, and guests and the party was officially started! 100+ Guests stampeded towards the carousel and the Selfie Memphis Booth.

The child-like joy that filled the room was infectious! Even the band members paused their set to take part in the fun.

All in all, the 2019 Unmasking Childhood Obesity Gala was grand! We could not have hosted such a phenomenal event without our supporters. Thank YOU to our Village! Together we are truly leading our youth and their families to better health.

See you next year! 2.8.20 We’re off the see the Wizard !
